Client: Petersburg Borough Water Authority
Year Completed: 2007
Project Cost: $1,080,000
The Petersburg Borough Water Authority retained GD&F to design improvements to Reed’s Gap Dam for compliance with Dam Safety regulations.
Reed’s Gap Dam, constructed in 1934, was a composite earthen and timber crib dam. Previous inspections revealed significant deterioration and leakage through the embankment. Unique features of the project included the following:
- New concrete cutoff wall along entire axis of the dam, extending from the crest to the foundation
- New concrete spillway and crest cap provide overtopping protection during the probable maximum flood
- New stilling basin and downstream erosion protection
- The existing timber and earth structure was replaced with a compacted, engineered fill embankment. The upstream face was resurfaced with a pressure mortar surfacing
- Cast-in-place concrete intake tower with multi-port valve system. Tower also included operating platform, aluminum access bridge and valve operators
- New intake line through embankment with concrete encasement and anti-seep collars
