South Park Street Bridge (JC-35) Replacement Over Stump Creek
Client: Jefferson County Commissioners
Year Completed: 2004
Project Cost: $1,200,000
JC-35, locally known as the South Park Street Bridge in Sykesville Borough, was a steel girder structure that was structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.
The replacement project offered unique challenges. GD&F's design accommodated a 1961-era US Army Corps of Engineers flood control channel/levee system and an adjacent railroad. Also, existing utility adjustments at the site included natural gas, water, phone, cable, and electric lines.
GD&F designed the project to meet current PennDOT standards. The bridge provides a curb-to-curb width of 28'-0" with pedestrian walkway. GD&F designed new substructure elements (abutments) for the new P/S spread box beam superstructure and a reinforced concrete deck. The clear span is 50'-6" with a vertical underclearance of 16'-9". A concrete apron and channel section tied into the flood channel and levee system.
Significant approach roadway work was designed to tie the new structure into the existing roadway alignment including sidewalks, curbs, and drainage. The project was completed on-time and within PennDOT's budget.
