Munn Road Bridge Replacement Over Bennett's Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek
Client: Huston Township
Year Completed: 2006
Project Cost: $725,000
The Munn Road bridge was a substandard single span, steel I-beam structure with a wood planking deck and failing concrete abutments. Gwin, Dobson & Foreman, Inc. designed a new single-lane replacement structure, one of the first bridges constructed under the new state guidelines for single lane bridges.
The new bridge is a 45 foot single span, single lane, pre-stressed concrete spread box beam structure with a composite reinforced concrete deck. The design was based on a 75 degree skew and a superstructure depth of 26-inches (spread box).
The project involved considerable approach work. The project terrain is mountainous and heavily forested. The existing roadway grade at the far approach was 13%. GD&F designed the approaches according to PennDOT Design Manual Part 2M for correction of horizontal deficiencies and reduced the grade to 9% for improved sight distance and traffic safety.
GD&F did all preliminary and final design engineering work including line and grade report; hydrology/hydraulics report; categorical exclusion report; type, size and location report; joint permit application, subsurface investigation; foundation report; right-of-way plans; drawings; specifications, cost estimate, construction administration and resident inspection.
All work was done under the auspices of PennDOT District 2-0, Clearfield, PA. The project was designed and constructed under a retroactive reimbursement agreement between Huston Township and PennDOT District 2-0. The project was finished on-time and within budget.
