Under an open-end contract with Norfolk Southern Railway, GD&F provided construction engineering and surveying services for a 250-acre intermodal terminal at the Rickenbacker International Airport, Columbus, Ohio.The $68 million project included:
- Stakeout of track, sidings, switches, turnouts, lift facilities, terminal building, automatic gate system, drainage facilities and stormwater management
- Cross-sections, layout and slope staking
- Quantity determination and verification involving 300,000 cubic yards of site earthwork and grading
- Layout of six (6) miles of rail extension to the site
- Precision control for 350,000 square yards of site paving (roller compacted concrete) and 400,000 tons of stone subbase
- Project coordination with railroad contractor and NS engineers
- Survey equipment utilized included total station, GPS and robotic units with specialized software for railroad curve layout geometry
The terminal is part of the Rickenbacker Global Logistics Park, one of the largest integrated logistics complexes in the United States. The facility will accommodate 250,000 annual lifts with an ultimate capacity of 400,000 lifts. The terminal is part of the NS Heartland Corridor between Norfolk, VA and the Midwest.
