Sportsman Road Culvert Replacement

Client: West Carroll Township, Cambria County, PA (PennDOT 9-0)

Year Completed: 2012

Project Cost: $250,000

The Sportsman Road precast concrete culvert project was designed in 2004. Because of a lack of funding, the project was deferred. In 2011, substructure movement and superstructure deficiencies resulted in lane and weight restrictions.

In response to West Carroll Township’s urgent need, Gwin, Dobson & Foreman designed an economical structure replacement. GD&F prepared construction documents for an aluminum plate box arch culvert with structural plate headwalls and wingwalls. The new structure maintained both the vertical and horizontal roadway alignment. Stream hydraulics was improved by altering the culvert location to properly align with the stream channel. During construction, traffic
was maintained by a DEP-permitted temporary stream crossing.

GD&F provided all design and construction consultation services according to PennDOT District 9-0 standards. The aluminum plate box arch was the first such installation in PennDOT District 9-0.
