Client: Berkeley County Public Service Water District
Year Completed: 2008
Project Cost: $4,000,000
The Berkeley County Public Service Water District serves suburban Martinsburg in the fast growing eastern West Virginia Panhandle. To supply the long term needs of the service area, Gwin, Dobson & Foreman, Inc. designed a 30-inch water transmission main along Interstate 81. The $4 million project will provide needed reinforcement and capacity for the growing water distribution system.
The project included the following major components:
- Tunnel boring operation under Interstate 81 consisting of a 54-inch diameter steel casing pipe with 30-inch ductile iron carrier pipe. The project required close coordination with WVDOT.
- Horizontal boring operation under CSX railroad consisting of a 48-inch diameter steel casing pipe with 30-inch ductile iron carrier pipe. This operation involved close coordination with CSX Corp.
- 8,000 feet of 30-inch ductile iron pipe installation with 12 wedge-type, 30-inch gate valves.
- Temporary waterline to serve adjacent businesses and industries during construction consisting of 3,000 feet of 12-inch PVC waterline installed above ground with all valves and appurtenances.
- Installation involved precise alignment next to a dense utility corridor including a high voltage electric transmission line and high pressure natural gas line.
GD&F provided all engineering, design, construction administration, inspection and permit applications. The project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule.
