Client: Altoona Water Authority
Year Completed: 2004
Project Cost: $4,000,000
Prospect Reservoir, a 1915-era concrete water distribution reservoir, showed significant deterioration and leakage. Seeking a permanent storage solution, the Altoona Water Authority authorized Gwin, Dobson & Foreman, Inc. to engineer a unique, but cost-effective water storage tank.
The project included the following elements:
- Design of one (1) 5.67 million gallon water storage tank (with inner ring divider wall) consisting of AWWA D110-95 Type III wire wound circular prestressed concrete
- Tanks incorporated unique tank mixing piping system to promote tank mixing and turnover
- Telemetry building and SCADA system
- Demolition work for existing concrete open reservoir and hypalon liner/cover system
- Extensive site work and design including site excavation, access roads, landscaping and fencing
- Site storm water drainage system and 24-inch water transmission main connections
- Extensive subsurface investigations, soil/rock testing and foundation design
- Coordination of neighborhood meetings and public participation including handout materials and 3-D model presentations
The project was deemed a complete success by the Altoona Water Authority. The project was funded by a low interest loan from the PA Infrastructure Investment Authority.
