Water Distribution System Replacement

Client: Borough of Sharpsville

Year Completed: 2011

Project Cost: $5,750,000

Located near Sharon, PA on the Ohio-PA border, Sharpsville Borough is a former industrial community with a population of 4,415. The Borough water department provides water service to 2,000 customers through a 24-mile water distribution system.

A 2005 Gwin, Dobson & Foreman hydraulic study revealed an aging and inadequate pipeline system. Corroded and deteriorated lines were causing leakage and discoloration. Unlooped and undersized mains did not provide adequate fire protection. To address these community needs, the Borough engaged GD&F to design the water distribution system upgrades.

The project involved the installation of 42,000 ft. of 8-12 inch ductile pipe which replaced an undersized 4 and 6-inch cast iron pipe network. The project also included the replacement of 44 fire hydrants. Fully one-third of the water system was replaced under this project.

GD&F provided all engineering and construction services. The project was funded by a low interest Pennvest Loan (utilizing American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds) as well as a Pennvest and DECD PAH20 Grants.
